Measuring the linear electrical resistance of conductors is the standard method of IEC for ampacity determination. This paper discusses the benefits of such a measurement compared to weight calculation/measurements described in ASTM standards. Among them, the possibility of high-accuracy “on-the-line” measurement without cutting the conductor is detailed. Progress in the current distribution homogenization of off-line measurements and their application to watertight and Millikan conductors are also presented.
