A metallurgical investigation of weld failure was done to identify the defect and arrive at the source of defect generation. Spark generation at the annealing jaws produces a hard spot near the HAZ (heat affected zone) which is quenched rapidly and produces a hard phase resulting in a button-shaped defect after drawing. The results indicate that measures of weld joint preparation and weld annealing procedure plays a key role in avoiding the defect and associated wire failure.
